Luscious melodies and gentle improvisation feature on Black Tulip Trio’s debut album Light Dance. All pieces are original, composed by pianist Casper Tromp.

The trio consists of 3 long term collaborators: Casper on piano, Maximillian Alduca on double bass and Cameron Reid on drums. Their inspirations are in European jazz and classical music, particularly Bobo Stenson, John Taylor, Maurice Ravel, and Chopin.

Black Tulip Trio plays with a soft yet distinctive touch,
occasionally building tension in stronger passages.
As they’re used to performing unamplified (with only the occasional amplification for the bass), they sought to replicate this in the studio. Craig Field’s Elkwood studio provided an amazing space where they could perform live, reacting to the sound of the instruments in the same room.

The repertoire is selected from the last 8 years of performances. Far Away, Autumn and Enigma are modern jazz pieces, with strong melodies and lyrical solos. Opener Fractal and closing track Waves are minimalistic compositions that inspire the trio to experiment with form and dynamics. Light Dance and Turquoise are high-energy classically inspired pieces, with energetic solos and themes.
